Integrated EEG + TMS

Integrated EEG + TMS Solutions

The combination of electroencephalography (EEG) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a growing area of interest in neuroscience, psychiatry and many other fields of research and clinical practice. EEG can be used to inform when and where TMS should be applied and/or to see how TMS affects the brain. High density EEG (HD-EEG, EEG with 64 or more channels) offers unique opportunities to understand brain dynamics given the high spatial and temporal resolution. Saline-based electrodes allow for rapid application of large numbers of EEG sensors (64, 128 or 256) plus minimal participant / patient clean up following a recording. This allows for easy recordings before and after a TMS session. Thanks to recent innovations to the MagstimEGI geodesic sensor net, you can now also record HD-EEG during a TMS session while minimizing the recovery time of the EEG signal after a TMS pulse. No matter which EEG + TMS protocol you wish to run, saline based HD-EEG offers significant advantages for researchers and clinicians. This technology provides the resolution needed to better image and understand the complex brain dynamics at play across the spectrum of disorders.

01
MagstimEGI TMS-EEG inteoperability solution

When recording EEG with the Geodesic EEG System while stimulating with the Magstim TMS system, the pulse from the TMS system will create an artifact in the EEG data.  The artifact, without hardware or software-based tools to reduce or remove it, can last 100 millisecond or longer after the pulse. There are several options for dealing with this artifact.  These tools can more accurately remove the artifact if they are provided with a marker of the stimulation onset. The MagstimEGI TMS-EEG inteoperability cable provides the ability to precisely mark the TMS stimulation onset to remediate the TMS artifact more accurately in the EEG data. The cable transmits the stimulation marker from the TMS System via the TMS Interface Module to the Geodesic EEG System Net Amps Digital Inputs. The DB-9 to DINs cable, provided with the Net Amps, is needed to connect the TMS cable to the Net Amps Digital Inputs.

02
What's included

The TMS-EEG interoperability solution consists of the following:

  1. The TMS-EEG Interoperability Cable, a dual BNC to DB-9 cable with grounding wire
  2. 15”DB-9 male to male cable
  3. TMS Interface Module (optional)
  4. DINs to DB-9 cable (optional)
  5. Instructions for Use

Items one and two provide the connection between items three, the TMS Interface Module and item four, the Net Amps DINs to DB-9 cable. Items three and four are optional as some users may already have these components.

03
TMS compatibility

The TMS-EEG integration cable is compatible with the Magstim BiStim, 200, and Rapid TMS systems. Consult with your TMS or EEG sales or support teams if you have questions about compatibility with your existing equipment or to purchase additional components.

04
Demonstration

MagstimEGI also now offers the ability to time-lock TMS pulses to audio, pictures or video using E-Prime hardware and software created by Psychological Software Tools (PST). This interoperability solution allows E-Prime to trigger TMS pulses synchronized with sensory stimuli, possibly in conditions like substance use disorder or other conditions in which you want to activate a brain state for TMS to manipulate. This solution requires E-Prime 2 or 3, the Chronos response box and the MagstimEGI Chronos adapter, all produced by PST and available from MagstimEGI.
