Sensor Nets for More Hair Types

Tall EEG Sensor Nets – Optimized For More Hair Types

Hydrocel Geodesic Sensor Net (HCGSN)

  • Rapid application sensor net optimized with taller electrodes for inclusivity allowing recording with more types of hair
  • Record from more people and record better data quality
  • Taller electrodes make better contact with the scalp, particularly with dense, textured hair that can lift standard electrodes off the scalp and lead to data quality issues
  • Helps facilitate initiatives to remove bias and exclusion in EEG research

Optimized For More Hair Types

A wide array of individuals, groups and institutions are working to address the history of systemic racial bias in the field of neuroscience due to underrepresentation and methodological barriers that have only gained broad attention in recent years. Traditional methods of EEG require scalp contact with minimal impedance between an electrode and the scalp to access the brain’s electrical signal. This has led to findings and generalizations that do not represent the diversity of our communities and our planet. Those who have hair types requiring extra consideration have been unfairly screened out of participation in neuroscience research, forced to dramatically alter their hair to receive clinical diagnostics, or in the worst cases, have been denied access to potentially lifesaving diagnostics. Dedicated scientists, clinicians, and leaders in the field have been working to address this lack of diversity, both individually and in groups such as Black in Neuro (https://blackinneuro.com).

MagstimEGI is proud to be part of efforts to address such biases with the release of a modified version of our HD-EEG sensor net that has been optimized for a wider range of hair types. In addition to hardware changes to our sensor net, we are also releasing guidance on applying standard and optimized sensor nets on participants with dense, curly, or afro-textured hair, and styles such as locs and braids. Our open net structure has proven to be valuable in achieving scalp contact, and multiple research labs have shown that the new sensor nets and new application methods improve their ability to collect high quality data on more hair types than our standard sensor net.
